Howell Heating repairs, maintains, and installs central air conditioners for homeowners in Forest Lake and across the Northeast Metro. We carry and are factory-trained on Lennox® and Carrier®, and we also service all major brands, so we can help regardless of what brand is currently installed in your home.

Air Conditioner Repair

Minnesota summers can get hot and humid, and an AC that stops keeping up is more than an inconvenience. We repair all major air conditioner brands, from refrigerant leaks and frozen coils to failed capacitors, fan motors, and compressors. We'll find what's actually causing the problem, explain it in plain language, and give you the price before we start any work.

Plenty of homeowners search for answers online before calling, and a few basic checks are worth doing first: make sure the thermostat is set to cool, check your air filter, and look for a tripped breaker or a shutoff switch near the outdoor unit. Past that point, it's time to call a professional. Air conditioners run on high-voltage electrical components, and refrigerant can only be legally handled by EPA-certified technicians. If you're not sure what you're looking at, leave the unit closed up and give us a call. Let us know what you've already checked, and we'll take it from there.

Howell Heating is not responsible for damage, injury, or additional repair costs resulting from repairs or troubleshooting attempted by homeowners or third parties.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Air Conditioner?

Most central air conditioners last 12 to 15 years. If yours is in that range and facing an expensive repair, replacing it is often the better long-term value. Age isn't the only factor, though. If your system still uses R-22 refrigerant, repairs involving refrigerant can get expensive, because R-22 production ended in 2020 and remaining supplies are limited. We'll look at your system's age, condition, and repair history and give you an honest recommendation either way.

Which Air Conditioners Do We Install?

We install two air conditioner lines from each of our two brands, giving you options at different price points:

  • Dave Lennox Signature® Collection: the top of the Lennox lineup, with its quietest operation and highest efficiency. Learn more at Lennox.com

  • Lennox Merit® Series: reliable Lennox cooling at a more budget-friendly price. Learn more at Lennox.com

  • Carrier Infinity® Series: Carrier's premium line, designed for precise temperature and humidity control. Learn more at Carrier.com

  • Carrier Performance™ Series: a solid middle ground from Carrier, balancing efficiency, comfort, and cost. Learn more at Carrier.com

A new air conditioner only performs as well as it's installed. Our Best Practice procedures include charging refrigerant to the manufacturer's specifications, checking your copper line set, and looking at your ductwork, so your new system delivers the efficiency you paid for. Estimates on new AC installs are always free, and financing is available.

Warranty: Every new air conditioner we install comes with a 10-year parts warranty from Lennox® or Carrier®, plus a 2-year labor warranty from Howell Heating. We handle the warranty registration for you.

Looking at Heat Pumps or Mini-Splits?

Heat pumps and ductless mini-splits cool your home in summer and heat it in winter. If you're comparing them with a traditional air conditioner, see our Heating page for details on both.

Is Your Ductwork the Problem?

If some rooms stay warm no matter how hard your AC runs, the air conditioner may not be the issue. Leaky, undersized, or poorly designed ductwork can keep cool air from reaching the rooms that need it. We check ductwork as part of every evaluation and can repair, seal, or reroute ducts when that's what's holding your comfort back.

Do You Need a Yearly AC Tune-Up?

It depends on your system. Newer air conditioners often don't need much upkeep, and we won't push a visit you don't need. If you're wondering whether a tune-up makes sense for your system, call us, and we'll give you an honest answer.

DID YOU KNOW?

A dirty outdoor unit can make your air conditioner work much harder than it should. Grass clippings, cottonwood fluff, and leaves clog the coil fins, which cuts efficiency and adds wear. Keeping about two feet of clear space around your outdoor unit is one of the easiest things you can do to help your AC.
